This state's Medicaid program requires that children with special health care needs be served by managed care, but families say this is not working, especially for kids with mental health problems. It is also becoming difficult for our children to receive specialty services, either because of insurance coverage or the lack of specialists in rural areas. However, because of the partnership of family advocates with Medicaid, there is hope that the next round of Medicaid managed care contracts will be better for kids with special health care needs. Almost 5,000 New Mexico families have received assistance from PRO, the parent organization housing Family Voices.
