In North Carolina, over 1,200 families receive Family Voices information and over 300 members receive the state Family Voices newsletter. This year, working with partners, our Coordinators helped change the CHIP waiting period for children with special health care needs and presented to the state CHIP agency, the Developmental Disabilities Council, the Part C/ICC Council, and others. The two most pressing problems are accessing providers or services and finding information about supports or services kids might qualify for. In fact, there is no one place for families to go for information about insurance, patients' rights, Medicaid waivers, CHIP, or advocacy strategies. Even if families have insurance or Medicaid waivers, there is a lack of qualified care providers. In rural areas, transportation for caregivers or for family appointments is almost like having no services.
