Accufuser Plus Pain Pump
Recently, The American Journal of Sports Medicine published an article linking reports of postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis to intra articular pain pump catheters. They found that pain pumps in the shoulder such as those manufactured by Donjoy may cause permanent shoulder injuries.
The Accufuser/Accufuser Plus system is intended intended for general infusion use such as intravenous, percutaneous, subcutaneous, intra-arterial and epidural, and into the intra-operative (soft tissue / body cavity) site. The Accufuser Plus is also intended for patient-controlled infusion using the integrated bolus button. General infusion uses include pain management for preoperative, perioperative and postoperative surgery.
The Accufuser and Accufuser Plus systems are also intended for continuous and/or intermittent delivery of medication (such as local anesthetics or narcotics) to surgical wound sites and/or close proximity to nerves for preoperative, perioperative and postoperative regional anesthesia and pain management.
Recent studies have shown that the use of pain pumps which deliver medication directly to the shoulder after surgery may cause damage to cartilage in the shoulder. It is alleged that these pain pumps may deliver too much medication, permanently deteriorating and eventually destroying cartilage in that area. Some reports have linked this devastating condition "chrondrolysis" or PAGCL to intra-articular pain pump catheters such as those manufactured by Stryker, I-Flow and Donjoy.
