Shoulder Pain Pumps
Shoulder pain pumps are small medical devices used to manage pain. They are used after surgery by surgeons to deliver continuous doses of anesthetic drugs directly into the incision site. In some cases, months after using the pump, the shoulder cartilage erodes away, leaving the patient with limited range of motion and constant shoulder pain, sometimes even while at rest. For some, the only option is shoulder replacement surgery once the pain has become unbearable.
Recently, The American Journal of Sports Medicine published an article linking reports of postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis to intra articular pain pump catheters. They found that pain pump implants in the shoulder may cause permanent shoulder problems. Models, currently being investigated include:
• Styker Pain Pump, Stryker PainPump 1, Shoulder Pain Pump2 and the Styker PainPump Blockaid • I-Flow Pain Pump, On-Q Painbuster (ONQ) (I Flow) (Q Pain Pump) • Donjoy Shoulder Pain Pump, Donjoy Pain Control Device, Accufuser Plus Pain Pump
There have been a number of lawsuits filed against the makers of surgical pain pumps Pain alleging a link to Chondrolysis and destruction of shoulder joint and cartilage. Symptoms include shoulder weakness, pain and a decreased range of rotation, clicking, popping and/or grinding of the shoulder and cartilage. If you or someone you love has developed chondrolysis as a result of a shoulder pain pump, you should contact an attorney immediately.
