Acquired Brain Injury
Definition: Acquired brain injury refers to damage or destruction of brain tissue due to trauma or a wide range of medical conditions, e.g. anoxia, poisoning or aneurysms. It does not include disabilities from neurological impairments that may occur at or before birth such as cerebral palsy or mental retardation. Traumatic brain injury refers to damage or destruction of brain tissue due to a blow to the head or violent shaking of the head, such as those which may occur in an assault, a car crash, a fall or similar incidents, even a "minor head injury " or "minor brain injury" could result in serious cognitive, emotional and physical impairments.
Acquired brain injury is an impairment of brain functioning that can be physically or psychologically verifiable. Other common causes of acquired brain injury are brain lesions caused by traumas such as falls, and sports injuries. Other brain lesions can be due to internal problems such as tumors, aneurysms, or infections of the brain such as encephalitis. Another cause of acquired brain injury is ingestion of toxic substances due to either alcohol or drug abuse or exposure to toxic chemicals.
