Amusement Park Ride Safety

All to often a fun day at an amusement park turns deadly.  The number of injuries and deaths associated with theme park rides has prompted recent legislation:

June 29, 2006 - MARKEY RENEWS CALL FOR PASSAGE OF FEDERAL LEGISLATION TO PROTECT CHILDREN ON ROLLER COASTERS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS
Washington, DC -- Today another child tragically died after riding a roller coaster at Disney’s MGM Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida, and U.S. Representative Ed Markey (D-MA) renewed his call on the Congress to immediately pass federal legislation to end a massive loophole in safety regulation of theme park rides.  Rep. Markey’s bill, the National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act, was introduced in the spring of 2005, and would extend federal oversight over amusement park rides, which now enjoy an exemption from current consumer product safety laws and regulations.
April 13, 2006- Industry Called on to Support Amusement Park Safety Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA), who has been pressing Congress for several years to close an unusual safety exemption in the law that excludes any federal participation in investigating and preventing deaths on amusement park rides and is the author of the National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act to close this massive loophole in safety regulation of theme park rides, today issued the following comment following the news that a second death has occurred on the same ride – the “Mission: Space” attraction at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida – in less than a year.

June 14, 2005- Death of 4-Year-Old at Epcot Underlies Need to Close Safety Loophole

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), who has been pressing Congress for several years to close an unusual safety exemption in the law that excludes any federal participation in investigating and preventing deaths on amusement park rides, issued the following comment today following the death of a 4-year-old boy on the Mission: SPACE ride at Disney’s EPCOT Center in Orlando, FL:

“The death yesterday of 4-year-old Daudi Bamuwamye from Pennsylvania on an amusement ride in Florida is an unspeakable horror for his family. The questions it raises need to be fully investigated and answered so that this horror is not repeated for any other family.

May 19, 2005- Lawmaker to Introduce "National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act"
Washington, DC: In the wake of the conviction of a Tennessee amusement park manager for reckless homicide in the falling death of a park patron, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) today announced that he is re-introducing the National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act to close a massive loophole in safety regulation of theme park rides.

In addition, there is no state law requiring carnival companies conduct mandatory background checks on carnival workers.

In the last three years, a ride operator with a criminal record molested an 8-year-old girl at a Downers Grove festival; a convicted child sex offender got a job running a merry-go-round at a Palatine festival; and a carnival worker with an outstanding warrant for burglary charges and who had a prior arrest for raping a child was caught working at a Glen Ellyn carnival.

If you have been injured as a result of an amusement park accident or incident, you may be entitled to monetary compensation.  For a free case review, fill out the form below:
