Head Injury
"Because the brain is very complex, every brain injury is different. Some symptoms may appear right away, while others may not show up for days or weeks after the concussion. Sometimes the injury makes it hard for people to recognize or to admit that they are having problems. The signs of concussion can be subtle. Early on, problems may be missed by patients, family members, and doctors. People may look fine even though they’re acting or feeling differently.
Because all brain injuries are different, so is the recovery process. Most people with mild injuries recover fully, but it can take time. Some symptoms can last for days, weeks, or longer. In general, recovery is slower in older persons. Also, persons who have had a concussion in the past may find that it takes longer to recover from their current injury." (CDC)
A Head injury can range from something as mild as a concussion, to something as serious as a fractured skull or brain swelling. Head injuries are usually caused by a blow to the head. In some cases the object striking the head will penetrate the skull and injury will be immediate and obvious. In other cases, the blow may not penetrate the skull or even the scalp; this type of injury is known as a closed head injury.
With any type of head injury, it is crucial that it be diagnosed as quickly as possible. If a head injury remains untreated for too long it may lead to very severe future complications, and may even result in death. Symptoms of a head injury include blurred vision, nausea, memory loss, and increased sleepiness.
