Train Accidents
Train accidents occur frequently in the United States. Often they are not large accidents and involve no fatalities so they don’t receive national coverage. Sometime, however, railroad accidents do result in lost lives or hazardous material spills.
From the years 1960 to 2001 trains have been responsible for 13,136 fatalities. That means each year trains were responsible for the death of upwards of 325 people. One may not consider this number to be exceptionally large, however when compared to the statistics for aviation crafts since the 1960's: 3,061 fatalities, close to 75 per years, one has to realize that per mile traveled trains are not the safest mode of transportation.
Train accidents usually consist of derailments, collisions with passenger vehicles, collisions with other trains, or accidents due to mechanical failure. Often it is the railroads’ negligence or the negligence of the operator that leads to these accidents which means they could have been avoided had the railroad acted in a proper fashion.
